Excerpt #2 My heart sped up thinking of the nights we’d spent together. Alone with him, I’d been in heaven, utterly lost to the world. Loving the way his fingertips had softly slid down my skin and sent goose bumps flaring throughout my body, it was searing and his scent, intoxicating. How do you get over someone like that? Especially after the day he turned me into a shadow in his midst, left in the cold, alone. It was no different than throwing me under the bus. At the time, it had left me empty, a hollowed mess that I had been left to clear away, bit by painful bit.

But I wasn’t eighteen anymore and definitely not that fragile, naïve and trusting girl I’d once been.

Air Harper never wanted to grow up. To offset the limitations of growing old ungracefully, she created her own set of unique worlds where she can be and do whatever she wants. God, demons and witches surround Ari while she spins her magic, mainly doing what they tell her to do.

She likes to work amongst chaos when given a choice, which is good because she is generally surrounded by children, all clamoring for attention. Some of them end up in her stories, some of them even get to die grisly deaths or be cast away to another realm.
Her favorite pet is a big black Labrador, Hugo. He stars as himself in the Curse of Kin series as Nera's faithful hound.

"Witches did and still do exist. You know that wherever there is good there must also be evil to balance it out." He paused, took a deep breath, then continued. "That can take many forms, witches only being one of them. Not all witches are evil obviously, but Edrith O'Reilly was very evil. When Pria planned to elope with Edrith's youngest son, she placed a curse on them. She cursed me, and she cursed her own son. I know this is a lot to take in, Nera, but what I have told you is true. That is exactly what happened."

"Come on, Jasper. You really don't expect me, us, to believe this, do you?" It couldn't be true, yet parts of his story were settling into my heart and mind already, as if the words had been waiting to find a resting place within me.

"Yes, girl dear, I do," Jasper replied, gazing at me. "How did your daughter die, Jasper?" Sully asked, obviously remembering the other dream that I had constantly.

"Edrith slit her throat with a sword, Sully."

I felt the bile rise in my own throat and pressed my hand to my mouth in an effort to stop it. Breathe, I told myself, just breathe. I squeezed my eyes tight and fought for control. I could feel a hand on my knee, and when I looked up, Jasper was kneeling on the floor in front of me, his gaze full of pain.

"Was that the other dream you were having?" His beautiful blue eyes were shadowed and troubled.

I nodded my head. The words stuck in my mind, the bile forcing its way up my throat. I pushed past him and ran for the downstairs bathroom in the hallway. I leaned over and retched into the bowl. I gripped onto the sides to stop myself from collapsing to the floor. My knees had gone weak, and cold sweat was running down my face. I couldn't control the shaking and was past caring. Neither my body nor my mind could accept what I had heard. It wasn't possible. How could it be that Jasper is 800 years old and I am reliving his daughter's death on a nightly basis? No, it is not possible.

There was a light tap on the door, and Brie tiptoed in with a damp cloth in her hands. Her mouth was set into a grim line. She watched me as I struggled to stand and then handed me the cloth. I leaned against the basin, unsteady on my feet. I wiped my face and hands and looked up at her, my gaze searching her face for any trace of sympathy.

"I'm really going crazy, aren't I?" I hung my head, suddenly not wanting to see the pity in her eyes.

"I don't think you are," she replied, her voice gentle. She ran her hand down my arm before I pulled away. "I think what Jasper is saying is true. Why don't you come back into the library and we can discuss it more."

"You're kidding, right," I scoffed at her, ignoring the shocked look on her face. "You don't seriously believe this stuff. Does he look that old to you?" I leaned on the basin until the ground stopped moving under my feet.

"No, he doesn't." Brie brushed her hair back from her face and then licked her lips at the reflection in the mirror over my shoulder. "But he said that was part of the curse, Nera. Just listen to him before you decide you're crazy and he is lying."

"Whatever." I threw the cloth into the sink and pushed past her out of the bathroom.

Jasper and Sully looked up when I stalked back into the room. Brie followed me and hurried to sit with Sully on the couch. I opted to stand beside the fireplace, my arms folded.

"I don't believe you," I said, knowing that with the hitch in my voice I didn't sound convincing. I was acting like a petulant bitch, but I couldn't help it. The way the day was shaping up called for my worst side to come out and play and I really didn't care.

"Before you make up your mind, there's more, Nera." He pursed his lips, then continued. "When there is a curse, there is always a way out of that curse. Each third generation since that time has had one female child that has the ability to break the spell. Not all have had the faith in themselves or believed in me enough to do so. Maybe their connection wasn't close enough," he shrugged. "I don't really know. But you are third generation. You are stronger than any other female that has come forward. Because of who you are, Nera, you are the one."

Jasper watched me closely while I tried to process the information that he had given me. I nibbled on my bottom lip and pulled at my hair. "What are you trying to tell me?" I asked him.

"When you were born, I knew who you were." A small smile hovered on his lips. "You were born with a caul, a part of the birthing membrane, on your head, and that makes you a Caulbearer, girl dear. In the world of magic, this marks the child as unique and powerful, usually with psychic gifts, like second sight and the ability to soul journey. But we can talk about that later."

"Does that mean Nera is a witch?" Brie asked, her eyes wide as she looked at me, her face lighting up.

"I guess that depends on your definition of a witch," Jasper replied. "I believe there are people in this world who have special abilities. Some call themselves witches, some don't. It's just the way you perceive something, I suppose."

"So what does she have to do with the whole curse thing, then?" Sully asked.

Jasper's gazed met mine before he answered. "She is the one that can stop the curse and let me die."

"Are you crazy, Jasper? How can you even think I would let you die?" I jumped to my feet, the horror of what he was saying slamming into me. I paused for a breath, the fear gripping my chest like a vice which made such a simple task difficult. It was too much for me. I turned and fled to the kitchen and threw open the door to the garden. I gulped down a breath of cool air and lurched over to a grassy patch and sank to the ground. Hugo walked over to me and licked my hand before sitting down in front of me, his soulful brown gaze on my face.

"Oh, Hugo, what is going on?" I cried, pushing my face into his fur. Cradling his head in my arms for comfort, I leaned against his huge body. I felt movement, and Brie and Sully sat down beside me. They reached out and wrapped their arms around me. Most of what Jasper had told us was hard to believe, but what if it was true? Parts of my brain screamed at me that it was possible, but parts still balked at the idea of witches, gods, and demons—especially so close to someone I loved.

"Do you believe what Jasper said?" Sully leaned forward. He picked a blade of grass and ran it through his fingers before looking at me again."Do you think it could be possible?"

"I really don't know." I sighed, rubbing the back of my hand over my face. "It seems so farfetched."

"But it could be true." Brie leaned her chin on my shoulder. "What if you really are what he says you are? I've always said there was something special about you. Everyone thinks so, not just Sully and me."

"Yeah, Connor thinks I'm special, so special he wants to grope me every time he sees me," I scoffed.

"Stop being so pigheaded. You know you have something that no one else has. Do you really think we would hang out with you if you were normal?" Brie joked. Her smile faded quickly when I looked at her, and she pulled away from me.

"I know you are trying to make me feel better, and I do appreciate it, I really do. But if this is even halfway true… It's so much to take in." Just pull yourself together, girl. This is getting you nowhere, tears over, deal with it.

My Review

A fantastic short read. This story is about friendships and bonds that cannot be broken. Sandra, Frankie and Candice each have magical abilities. I loved how each of them viewed and acted on their abilities in different ways. The weakness of one is strength in another. And I have to say that I am getting more and more into inked up characters and really enjoyed Calvin’s character and how he helps Sandra and Frankie find Candice. A great heartwarming story, I enjoyed each and every page and look forward to reading more from this author.

Excerpt 1

Sandra leaned against the door frame, reached into her low-rider jeans’ back pocket and produced an envelope. She passed the folded paper to her. Frankie stared at the picture, reading the words: Child Find, Missing; young female seventeen, eyes hazel, brown hair, height 5’7”, weight 120.

“How could you keep this from me?” she asked, tightening her grip on the envelope.

“I didn’t. Yesterday, my mom received her Visa bill. She gave me the envelope when she saw Candice’s picture. I phoned her parents. They are in the middle of a divorce. Her mom said when they first split, she began to stay out late. Then one day she just never came home.”

“We have to find her. The police haven’t been able to,” Frankie said, waving the envelope.

“We will do what we must do to track her. Did you bring your cards?”

“Yes.”

“Come with me,” she said, grabbing her hand. She dragged her into the dish room stopping to retrieve her Tarot deck from the pocket of her jean jacket.

If you’re a fan of paranormal romance novels then you’ll love my Bellum Sisters Trilogy. This isn’t your typical romance story, so be prepared for a kick of heat and tons of action. RBTL Presents: Eternal Nights

Title: Eternal Nights
Author: V.S. Nelson
Series: Sekhmet’s Guardians Series Book 2
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Self Published
Release Date: May 2013
Formats: Paperback/Large Print Paperback/E~Books

My Rating:

Central Theme

To save the small infant’s life, Chenoa, her grandmother, did the unthinkable. She merged her life force with a tiny wolf cub then gave the cub to Jennifer, her other grand daughter to take care of. Too bad, Chenoa died before she was able to undo the spell or tell anyone what she had done. For twenty years Jessica watched the world pass her by through the eyes of another creature. Most of the time, the things humans did didn’t concern her, unless of course they told her to get off the couch or sleep on the floor. Thank the heavens above for Jennifer, who still doesn’t know who she truly is, or she’d still be eating raw meat.

Jessica was content and happy for the most part until she laid eyes on Raphael who came to pick her up from the wolf rescue center a few weeks ago. Since then, her primary focus has been to stay by his side and find away to undo her grandmother’s powerful magic.

In the meantime, Jessica has developed her natural Selkie abilities and has started communicating with Raphael. At night while he sleeps she enters his dreams under the pretense of what she should be – a human woman who has two arms to hold him and stands on two legs, not four.

Convinced he is going mad; Raphael privately searches for the angel who haunts his dreams. With an ivory face as soft as velvet, radiating both pure innocence and sexual seduction at the same time, what else could she be if not an angel? His search is interrupted when the Guardians discover the Legions latest endeavors; they’re kidnapping unprotected women and lifemates across the world. A call goes out and the Guardians once again implement their recruitment policy. The war is escalating.

Raphael takes Nowaki, Jennifer’s wolf with him to interview prospective candidates. Board with interviews he decides to take Nowaki on a run in the forest. Taking a break from running they stop by a near by stream. He doesn’t hear the gunshot but feels the blast as it hits his chest and falls to his knees.

Nowaki takes off after the assailant and gets her revenge but not until after the attacker mortally wounds her. Jessica takes over Nowaki’s body and pulls herself back to Raphael convinced they will die together. Lying on top of him to keep from getting cold, she has in reality, saved his life. The blood from her wounds drips down into his open mouth.

Jennifer along with Gabe, Thomas, Michael and Roger arrive on the scene. Michael tells Jennifer,” he’s sorry but Nowaki won’t make it back to the helicopter, much less the compound.” Jen, who was visited by Chenoa the night before now knows about Jessica and Nowaki but has yet to say anything to anyone. She shares her secret with Michael who immediately steps in and attempts to save the wolf. They all make it back to the where surgery is performed on both Raphael and Nowaki. Jennifer shares her grandmother’s secrets with Alice, her best friend, and Gabe.

When Raphael wakes he demands to go back to the forest. His Angel saved his life and no one will believe him. Gabriel finally tells him the truth, Jessica, his angel, and Nowaki are one in the same. The only problem is how to separate the two?

Chenoa shared a bit more with Jennifer… They must return to the cabin where Jessica was born in California and Jennifer must complete the ritual. Only problem is, she doesn’t know how. She waits for her grandmother to show her what to do.

Secondary stories

(1) While they wait for Chenoa to reappear the Guardians rescue several women from the Legion and bring them to the estate where Michael can care for them.
(2) Ronan, Jennifer and Jessica’s, Selkie father has an adverse reaction to the scene and everyone witnesses Selkies are not always the gentle creatures they appear to be.
(3) Michael believes they brought an air born virus into the compound with the women. All of the men are ordered to take up residency in the barracks since they are the only ones showing signs of infection. A female physician is brought in to care for the women. She soon discovers one of the women is not what she appears to be. Although human in appearance, Tshering Snow’s blood is feline in nature and she is in heat. (4) Gabriel distraught without Jennifer decides to make something for Raphael and him to eat, only to destroy Jennifer’s new kitchen in the process.
(5) Ronan and Jessica continue on with their romantic relationship.
(6) Legion soldier Alan Roberts turns coat and returns Guardian soldier Peter Armstrong and his love interest, ballet dancer, Alison to the Guardians. He waits to hear the Guardian’s decision—will he be put to death or not?
(7) Lance is captivated by the lovely Tshering Snow. A small group consisting of Jennifer, Alice, Gabriel, Raphael, Michael and Nowaki head to the Sierras to find the location where Jessica was born. The group sits around the campfire drinking their morning coffee when Nowaki is attacked by a cougar. Jennifer has no choice but to do the ritual without any preparation. She falls to the ground and passes out once the ritual is completed. Nowaki and Jessica are both bleeding out from wounds received by the cougar. Rather than take Jessica back to the motor home, Raphael asks her for his forgiveness and bites into his own wrists and forces his blood down Jessica’s throat in an attempt to save her. He is successful but is worried about the repercussions—will it bind them forever? The group spends an additional week in the mountains where Jessica learns how to walk, eat and be human. It’s soon discovered that Jessica is mute although she has no problem communicating with anyone; she merely utilizes her natural Selkie ability. Upon returning to the Illinois, Jessica and Raphael are finally lifemated but not before they must overcome another language barrier.

I was looking forward to reading this book and was not disappointed. Nelson did a wonderful job of building a world with interesting characters and an excellent story line. The plot has twists and turns and such raw emotions that it feels as if your are right there with them. I couldn't help but fall in love with the characters of this book and want to know what was happening, so yeah, this was another page turner that I had a hard time putting down. I am looking forward to the next book in the series!

V.S. Nelson has always enjoyed reading stories with strong relationships and happy endings so it’s not surprising she found herself writing across the romance genre. Even her commercial fiction, Sins of a Man, the memoirs of a Mafia Hit man, is layered with romantic elements.
Landing in Arizona, after an exciting teaching career, which took her to the Middle East for several years, she lives in Arizona where she spend most of my time making love to her computer while writing, editing or researching, seven to ten hours a day. The days she’s not writing, you will find her with my critique partners at Starbucks, attending or presenting a workshop or at a RWA meeting.
Being a Native American woman and a Scorpio, she’s always had a fondness for history, mythology, the occult, and the unexplained events which have occurred on this world we call home. It was no wonder she found herself writing a paranormal series.

Chapter Nineteen

The kitchen staff began serving the new recruits. One young familiar looking man stood up after being served.
“Sir, if it’s no trouble, I believe I could complete that paperwork you mentioned while I eat. I’m not that tired.”
Several more added their own comments on the subject. Now that they were here, they were eager to get things started. Raphael had chosen wisely--this group of young men appeared to be the best recruits he’s seen in a long time. He nodded, grabbed the forms from the upstairs office. Just as he approached the first table to pass them out one of the men stood and offered to do that for him.
He leaned back against the wall and watched as the men tended to eat with one hand and write with the other.
Sometimes sitting back and watching new recruits from afar would tell him more than having an hour long conversation with them. He was immediately impressed with the entire bunch. The same kid who offered to eat and do his paperwork looked like someone he knew but he couldn’t quite remember where he had seen him.
He left his position against the wall and stood next to the recruit who was signing his name on the last form. “Excuse me son, have I met you before? Your face is very familiar.”
“No sir, I have not had the honor. But I do believe you may have met my father. They say I look just like him. He served with the Guardians many years ago. His name is Bear…”
“Bear Hunter… Are you Bear Hunter’s kid? Well, I’ll be damned. How is the old son-of-a-bitch?”
“Yes sir, that’s my father and he is well, sir. Thank you for asking.”
“Next time you talk to him; you tell him hello from me.”
“I’ll do that sir. I’m sure he will be happy you asked about him. He has a lot of fond memories from his service days.”
Raziel nodded his head and then walked off. Damn, Bear Hunter’s kid. Wow, never thought that one was one for settling down. If that kid has any of his dad in him, he’ll be one fine soldier.
Raziel picked up the information packets on Raphael’s recruits. He started assigning the vacant rooms to teams who came in together. He made a quick decision and decided to put Hunter in with de’Angelo. It seemed like it would be a good paring.
